More exciting news for one of our pubs...

At Robinsons, we take pride in the rich history and unique stories behind our pubs. One such story has recently been commemorated with a blue plaque at The Bells of Peover, a friendly pub in Lower Peover, Cheshire. This historic establishment now proudly displays a plaque that honours its significant role in World War II, where two of the most influential Allied generals, Dwight D. Eisenhower and George S. Patton, discussed the pivotal plans for D-Day.

The blue plaque was unveiled in a ceremony that brought together local dignitaries, history enthusiasts, and members of the community. This momentous occasion highlighted the unique heritage of The Bells of Peover, cementing its place in both local and global history.

The Bells of Peover has always been more than just a pub. Steeped in history, it was originally established in the 14th century and has been a cherished part of the community ever since. Its stunning timber-framed architecture and serene surroundings make it a charming destination for locals and visitors alike. But its historical significance was truly underscored during World War II.

In 1944, amidst the serene backdrop of Cheshire’s countryside, The Bells of Peover became a meeting place for General Eisenhower and General Patton. The pub provided a discreet and secure setting away from the hustle and bustle of military bases. It was here that they convened to discuss the intricate details of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy, which marked a turning point in the war. The conversations and strategies formulated within these walls played a critical role in the successful execution of D-Day.

To commemorate this remarkable history, the blue plaque serves as a reminder of the pub’s unique contribution to the war effort. It stands as a testament to the bravery of the Allied forces, as well as the enduring legacy of The Bells of Peover as a place where history was made.

Preserving History

For Robinsons, preserving the heritage of our pubs is important to us. The Bells of Peover is a shining example of how our pubs are more than just places to enjoy a pint; they are living histories, each with their own story to tell.

At the The Bells of Peover you can now not only enjoy fine ales and delicious food but also take a moment to reflect on the extraordinary events that took place within its walls!
