It can be difficult at times to keep the little ones busy and entertained through the half term period. Thankfully, there’s plenty to see and do in Lancashire and North Yorkshire, from wild and wonderful walks through historic locations to local animal parks filled with friendly wildlife, there’s plenty going on near our Robinsons inns to keep the children happy this half term.
Tolkien Trail
Perfect for fans of the Lord of the Rings films and just a short twenty-minute drive from the Spread Eagle, the Tolkien Trail is a wonderful opportunity for an Autumn stroll with the whole family. Renowned for his love of nature and woodland landscapes, J.R.R. Tolkien spent his formative years at Stonyhurst College, where he would be inspired by the local scenery to create many of the locations found in his iconic works. As you make your way across the trail, you’ll find numerous spots that link to Tolkien’s Middle Earth stories, including the River Shirebourn, which lends its name to the hobbits’ famous home. As a 5.5-mile trail, this is a great option for filling up your little one’s day and tiring them out before you head to our nearby inn for a hearty meal.
Skipton Castle
Standing for 900 years as an incredible monument of Yorkshire craftsmanship, Skipton Castle is perfect for keeping the kids’ mind active while they’re off school with fascinating history. Once a powerful stronghold, the castle was the site of many of the country’s most famous battles and was a focal point in the War of the Roses. Today, visitors can take part in spectacular re-enactments from the castle’s heyday, taking you through history back to medieval times. You’re also welcome to bring your own picnic and have a full day out with the family.
Hesketh Park Farm
An idyllic farm situated within 10 acres of gorgeous Yorkshire Dales greenery; Hesketh Park Farm is a wonderfully wholesome day out for the whole family. Featuring a variety of indoor and outdoor fun, the farm is home to over 1,000 cattle, sheep and pigs who are all eager to meet visitors every day. Either out in the open fields or in the warm and cosy barn, your little ones will be welcome to pet and feed the animals to their heart’s content.
Clitheroe Castle & Museum
With a wealth of local history and panoramic views of the Ribble Valley, a day at Clitheroe Castle is an excellent mix of education and sightseeing. Perched above the town of Clitheroe, the castle has stood proud over the Lancashire skyline for 800 years, it’s walls and halls home to an endless array of stories and folklore. The site’s award-winning museum guides visitors through the town’s story, from local industry and historic figures to urban myths and legends. Featuring detailed exhibits, interactive displays and touchscreen animations, you’ll be immersed in a fully interactive experience.
