The Swan & Chequers sits in the centre of the historic market town of Sandbach. Located at the top of Hightown it has a commanding position looking down the main street. This large, wood-panelled, town centre pub, which is partially open plan, once belonged to Kays Atlas Brewery of Manchester. In 1929, Kays Atlas Brewery were bought by Frederic Robinsons Brewery and is now a key pub in our estate. Formerly a corn exchange public house, it was rebuilt as the Swan Hotel by Kays Brewery in 1893, this pub is steeped in history. The frontage has a terracotta plaque showing a beast holding a key in its mouth. There are several examples of the “the beast and the key” in painted glass on both the ground floor and first floor windows. It is believed that the “beast and key” was an emblem of the Kay family. Today, the Swan & Chequers is a spacious busy town centre Robinsons public house. Although partially open plan, it reflects its original multi room origins and busy day time trade of locals and shoppers visiting the town, especially on market day in Sandbach. Traditional pub games are popular on mid-week evenings, whilst entertainment takes over at the weekends when the Swan & Chequers becomes part of the town centre circuit, with a lively mix of clientele, covering all ages. Robinsons are looking for a licensee who will be able to involve themselves in the community of Sandbach. We are advertising this premises on a TAW or 1 year agreement.
A Little more about us
Sandbach is a market town in the County of Cheshire. Sandbach history is officially recorded from as early as the Doomsday book. In the 9th century local Saxons erected bejewelled Crosses to proclaim the Christian message and these famous Saxon Crosses still stand on the cobbles of the Market Square today. Markets have been held in the town for many centuries and in 1579 Queen Elizabeth awarded Sandbach a market charter, which ensured the town’s prosperity. The Charter Market takes place every Thursday, with regular Saturday markets and specialist markets taking place in the Town throughout the year. Sandbach is home to a fantastic array of independent stores offering a wide variety of products, with café’s, restaurants and hostelries providing a tempting and diverse selection of food and drink for daytime and evening visitors to the town.
